A quick pencil sketch of Wolverine with an altered suit. I always liked the brown suit but hated that silly mask. My favourite kit was the Quitely/Morrison bomber jacketed uniform. I do like the lack of 'undies' on the current more boiler-suit type design but they still brought back that stupid Batman-like mask. Sigh.
I don't know if you can tell, but my biggest influences on comic style art and Wolverine's look are Adam Kubert and Paul Smith.
Nice picture. The suit is great; you're right about the mask, it's just silly. Maybe, back in the times the character was born, someone could have liked the carnival-esque extravagance of the yellow and black suit and the big mask, but nowadays these features are just exaggerate. The "undies" were horrible, too; so tasteless.
I like your art. I wish every educational book could display so beautiful illustrations as yours.
I only wish the Marvel comics group could grow back the testicles they once possessed and move away from the garish tripe they for fantastic creative teams to create.
Quitely's designs should have been built upon and taken to the next level. Not scrapped in place of what has been before again again. Its terrible the disrespect that they have for the readers.
Its all obviously for marketing a recognizable brand to kids as a face on a lunch-box or an icon on a pencil-case etc...
I think we all agree on the fact that some characters, even if iconic in their appearance, should deserve more sensible designs. Marvel's not going to bankrupt just for changing a character's costume. Beside, such bright colours are good for luring kids, but they don't mix well with the mature topics in the storyline.
Its not even as if Wolverine is famous for the damned costume. Spider-man, Super-man, and very few others, fair enough. Costume makes the man n' all that.
To be perfectly honest, Wolverine is probably more widely known now in the old 'wife-beater' vest thing from X-Men 2 and 3.
Hey, I LOVE Wolverine's mask!! I love the old "John Byrne" Wolverine. Gotta note that only "some" people actually know how to draw Wolverine in a bad ass way. Some people know how to make the mask work.
Today, IMHO, not many do him justice. I hate the new wife beater crap. LOL And I am definitely not a fan of Franks work. Though he is a talented person to be able to know how to draw and I did appreciate his work in his older titles as "new" and "unique", just wasn't my cup of tea.
Time is an essence here. For every year that goes by, people get bored. But that doesn't necessarily mean the old stuff sucked. The old stuff was great! That's why the old stuff stuck around for so long. But as we got older, so have our tastes. And we all made the mistake in trying to explain everything bit by bit to the point where everything is now put in direct sun light. That was the worst thing we could do, IMHO. Tell you why... By doing so, we drain out all that was magical and weird in comics. The mystery is what kept kid's imagination juices going. The magical elements kept us up at nights wondering if such worlds existed where a Wolverine ran through the streets at night with claws extended, for some mysterious reason...
But sadly, we now exist in an era where magical stuff is pure bullshit. Where if something doesn't make sense, its now deemed bullshit. No room for mysterious imagination. The magic that once was in comics, is now gone in place of concrete "cleverness" instead.
And everything has to have purpose. Explanations. And I tell ya... there's nothing more ridiculous to me, than someone trying to make sense out of things in a world full of mythical characters like Wolverine.
But its the popular trend now. And no matter what, this is where its going. Mixing up briefs over pants with "realistic" suburban stories in broad shiny daylight, don't mix. And does look stupid.
However, briefs over pants in a world outside of our own, of dark and mysterious origin, with stories that would only be accepted in such a "strange, strange" dimension, definitely mix. Again, IMHO.
But its the vision. The vision has to be there. If its not. Just means the person doesn't have it. It's not just about drawing a character. You have to feel the character. BE the character and accept the strangeness of your existence. Enjoy and embrace the power of mythical creations. Such as Wolverine here.
I'm sorry. I Just read these comments and felt compelled, like an idiot, to share my nutty opinion about Wolverine.
I loved him in the 80s and 1990-92. From then on, he became advertisement garbage. IMO. I also don't like mature readers today. They make everything boring by having to make sense out of every single thing in a world that was once fantastical.
I want kids back in comics. Feed their imaginations. If one can get them away from Halo just for a sec that is, lol..
Anyways, cool drawing here. Very clean and simple version of the rabid Wolverine I know and love. Nice use of pastel colors. Almost looks like Disney's Wolverine. Suitable now dont ya think? ;]
